One of the most important accessories a woman could have was a hat, whether at home or abroad. Traveling with hats without damaging them was often an issue, but an issue that the malletiers of Louis Vuitton set out to solve. You can own this 1910 Louis Vuitton Lady’s Hat Box.
Louis Vuitton developed the ladies hat box, which came in a variety of sizes and could hold anywhere from four to sixteen hats. It employed a cage with ribbons, the only system that Louis Vuitton deemed in a 1914 catalog, “…one in which a hat can travel, no matter how expensive, without Madam fearing to find it damaged on arrival. Only one system meets these requirements- the cage with ribbons- and that is the one which we have adopted, excluding all others.”
Double hat boxes are a rare and legendary size. A woman that would need one of this size would often have tens of hats, and probably a handful of boxes of this size. Hat boxes make excellent end tables in any decor.
