The finely carved free standing bear has glass eyes, stained fur and painted mouth, nose and claws.  Similar original preparatory drawings in charcoal of this bear can be seen on page 46 of Swiss Carvings – The Art of The Black Forest by Daniels.
Standing bears are rare and even rarer still are free standing bears.  Usually these carvings were mounted on a wood base to balance them.  In this case the carver had to plan the posture of the bear around keeping him upright.  Another example of how gifted these nineteenth century carvers truly were.
