A Louis Vuitton “Malle Vache” Expandable Suitcase, circa 1908 in natural cowhide.  First pictured in a Louis Vuitton Catalogue dated 1908. The French trunk maker had no hesitancy about admitting that he was inspired by the fine luggage of English gentlemen.  Then he improved upon it.  He made both the content and form lighter and designed a model specifically for his English clients, fittingly named “London.”  He put out a catalog for Railway Companions, a line of suitcases and trunks for train travel, one of which, the Extending Top, was a roomy expandable suitcase available in five sizes and two qualities of finish. Taken from “100 Legendary Trunks – pages 106-107. Dandies & Fashionable Ladies. Height: 8.5″ Width:  26.5″ Depth:  14.5″
