This later Victorian figure of a gentleman hunter is carved in the form of a hunter returning home at the end of the day, dressed in buttoned hiking boots with deep tread and waistcoat and jacket. The chamois is slung over his shoulder, he holds his staff in his left hand and rifle in his right.
Hunter carvings represent an integral part of Alpine Victorian life at the turn of the century. Many of the hunter carvings were exhibited by the great carvers at the World’s fair including the Paris Exhibition of 1900 and the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. A famous Johann Huggler carving is pictured on page 96 of “Swiss Carvings – The Art of The Black Forest” by Daniels.
This carving is in exceptional condition it retains it’s original finish and color. The carving is crisp and detailed down to the veins on the hunters hands.
